A special prayer for the UK at this time

Eternal God, Light of the nations,
in Christ you make all things new:
guide our nation in the coming days through the inspiration of your Spirit,
that understanding may put an end to discord and all bitterness.
Give us grace to rebuild bonds of trust
that together we may work for the dignity and flourishing of all;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Monday, Psalm 44; John 17.1-5 Questions for reflection on John:
• We often think of eternal life as something in the future but Jesus here tells us it has already started. We are effectively living it. How?
• The word “glorify” is used many times in the short passage. What do you think Jesus means by this? How do we share in this?
• What verse speaks to you today? Repeat it and allow the Holy Spirit to speak through it.

Tuesday: Psalms 48, 52; John 17.6-19  Questions for reflection on John:
• In v11, Jesus prays for his disciples to be one as He and His Father are one. What do you imagine this unity to be?
• Jesus looks at us, his disciples, as no longer of this world. In what way is that true for you today?
• What verse speaks to you today? Repeat it and allow the Holy Spirit to speak through it.

Wednesday, Psalm 119.57-80; John 17.20-end Questions on John:
• Jesus again describes the life and love of his disciples together in terms of his relationship with the Father. Who does this mean that we are – together in Him?
• Jesus talks about his presence within us. This is beyond intimacy to a sharing of life in a different way. Reflect what that actually means for you today. How does this make you feel?
• What verse speaks to you today? Repeat it and allow the Holy Spirit to speak through it.

Thursday: Psalms 56, 57; John 18.1-11 Questions on John:
• Almost after the intense spiritual experience and words of Chapter 17, Chapter 18 snaps us back to the hard reality now facing Jesus. Betrayal, violence. The “world” comes flooding in. Do you ever feel like this? The shocking juxtaposition of our spiritual life in Christ and the harsh physical world? How do you deal with this?
• Jesus has already promise, “Fear not, for I have overcome the world”. Take that promise to heart today if you find yourself being drawn away from your life in Christ.
• What verse speaks to you today? Repeat it and allow the Holy Spirit to speak through it.

Friday: Psalms 51, 54; John 18.12-27 Questions for reflection on John:
• Peter’s denial, witnessed by John. Take a moment to reflect on Peter’s feelings and thoughts at this time… so soon after he attempted to defend Jesus with a sword. What makes him deny Jesus?
• Do you recognise any of Peter’s thoughts and motives in your own Christian walk? Remember, Jesus prayed for Peter that he would not fall away but find the strength and courage to follow his calling. Pray for the same for yourself (or another) today.
• What verse speaks to you today? Repeat it and allow the Holy Spirit to speak through it.

Saturday: Psalm 68; John 18.28-end Questions on John:
• Jesus is passed around as those in authority don’t really know how to handle him. What is their problem?
• Jesus wisdom and authority cannot be denied and often this creates anger in those who which to reject Him. Do you know anyone today who finds themselves “angry” with the God they try not to believe in? Pray for peace and faith for them today?
• What verse speaks to you today? Repeat it and allow the Holy Spirit to speak through it.
